Solar Electricity Safety Handbook for Firefighters

Picture

In 2014, CanSIA formed its Solar PV Fire Safety Working Group, which partnered with the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) to develop the first "Solar Electricity Safety Handbook for Firefighters," a training tool to educate firefighters about solar PV installations. The partnership proved to be an excellent example of genuine collaboration between the industry and stakeholders - a need was identified, consultation took place, and solutions concluded, all within less than a year. The project generated an unprecedented amount of interest among firefighters and the solar industry alike.

The training program, which provides for visible notification indicating the presence of a solar power system, is specific to solar power and includes protocols to be followed when addressing an incident in a location where solar PV installations exist. This program emphasizes the solar industry's commitment to safety.
