The Canadian Solar Industries Association Welcomes Ontario’s Newly Appointed Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines and Minister of Indigenous Affairs

29/6/2018

Toronto, ON    June 29, 2018

Today, the Government of Ontario announced the appointment of the Honorable Greg Rickford as Ontario’s new Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Minister of Indigenous Affairs. The Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) welcomes the opportunity to support Minister Rickford in fulfilling the government’s commitment to lower electricity bills for Ontario families, businesses and its diverse communities.

“Solar energy is unique because it provides a hands-on way for individuals, business and communities to produce and manage their own electricity in a more cost-effective way,” said John Gorman, President & CEO of CanSIA. “Indeed, the vast majority of projects our industry has secured in the last couple of years are in partnership with First Nations, Métis, municipalities, cooperatives and the agricultural community.”

CanSIA will work closely with Minister Rickford and the Ford government to find efficiencies in the existing electricity system. Future investments in Ontario’s electricity system can be avoided by producing and managing local electricity where and when it is needed. “Modernizing Ontario’s electricity system and saving Ontarians money is about giving the people control over how they produce and manage their needs,” said Gorman. “And when you keep electricity local, you help keep jobs local.”

CanSIA welcomes the opportunity to bring forward its recent research and recommendations for streamlining Ontario’s legacy regulatory and policy framework as a means to helping Minister Rickford deliver on this government’s intention to find cost-efficiencies in the electricity sector. “Removing regulatory barriers and recognizing the value of technologies that put control in the hands of the consumer is the best way to save money,” said Gorman.

On behalf of the solar industry, CanSIA would like to again welcome Minister Rickford to Ontario’s electricity sector and we look forward to working with this government to unleash its full potential for Ontario consumers.

About CanSIA:

A national, not-for-profit association, CanSIA works on behalf of its members to facilitate and promote the responsible and sustainable growth of solar energy across Canada. New GreenON Solar Energy and Energy Storage Program Will Help Ontarians Save Money and Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

1/5/2018

OTTAWA, CAN, May 1, 2018 - The Ontario Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Chris Ballard, has announced a new solar energy and energy storage program which will run through the Green Ontario Fund.

This new program allows homeowners and business owners to access funding making solar energy and energy storage systems more affordable, thus empowering them to generate their own electricity and better manage their energy usage. All this, while helping to fight climate change and transition Ontario towards a clean energy and innovation economy.

Approximately $90 million has been designated towards this program, which is expected to launch this summer. It will further build upon Ontario’s climate leadership and its solar success story, which not only created over 5,000 local jobs, but also continues to make the province a global leader in solar.

“The Ontario government has demonstrated its commitment to both creating jobs and a cleaner environment with the announcement of this new solar energy and energy storage program,” explained Thomas Timmins, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA).

“Ontario electricity consumers have clearly signaled they want to save money on their electricity bills. With this new program, Ontarians can affordably access innovative solar and energy storage solutions to achieve lower energy costs,” remarked Wesley Johnston, Vice President of CanSIA.

CanSIA Welcomes 2025 Extension for Solar Energy Accelerated Depreciation in Federal Budget 2018

28/2/2018

Ottawa, Ontario, February 28, 2018  - The Federal Government continues to build on Canada’s national climate action and clean growth efforts with the proposal to extend the Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance (ACCA) for energy efficiency and clean energy technology by five years in the Business Income Tax Measures in Federal Budget 2018.  ACCA is an important tax policy previously scheduled to sun-set in 2020 that enables businesses who make investments in technologies such as solar energy to defer taxation to later years thus enabling them to better manage their energy costs and encouraging them to make lower-carbon investments.

“The extension of this important provision will provide certainty for the clean energy sector and a clear signal that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting Canada’s transition to a lower-carbon energy future” said John Gorman, President & CEO, Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA).

CanSIA Members Recognized in Alberta for Upholding a High Ethical Standard

9/8/2017

Protecting and serving consumers by ensuring a fair, safe and informed marketplace is important to CanSIA and to our Member companies. Therefore, in early June of 2016, CanSIA initiated new consumer protection policies to fulfill this responsibility.

CanSIA’s introduction of a new standard

Leveraging the experience of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) (the American equivalent of CanSIA) and in consultation with its members, CanSIA developed a set of standards in 2016 to serve as a blueprint for the future.  The ‘Solar Business Code of Conduct’,  ‘Going Solar: A Guide for Consumers’ and a robust complaint resolution process were introduced to provide potential consumers with the tools to educate themselves, assess their needs and source reputable solar retailers.

With the swift uptake from Canadian solar companies, it was evident that high quality standards are not only important to the consumer, but important to the companies themselves. Members take pride in ensuring consumers recognize the value and security associated with the ‘Proud CanSIA Member’ logo.
Recognition by Alberta government for upholding a high ethical standard

On June 21st, Energy Efficiency Alberta launched its $36-million Residential and Commercial Solar Program. The two-year Residential and Commercial Solar Program is expected to create roughly 50 megawatts of solar capacity and support 900 jobs in Alberta's solar sector by 2019.

In recognition of CanSIA's commitment to consumer protection and ensuring ethical conduct by our members, Energy Efficiency Alberta directs program participants to CanSIA’s online Member Directory to find qualified solar providers.

CanSIA will continue to find new opportunities to demonstrate that our Members can be relied upon for fair, safe and high quality service.

Looking for a solar provider in your area? Check out CanSIA’s online Member Directory today.

Corporate Members who currently, or intend to, provide rooftop solar installation services to Alberta residents, businesses and non-profit organizations are eligible to be included in the list. If you are a CanSIA Member and have not yet confirmed your interest in offering solar PV installation services in Alberta, or if you would like to learn more about becoming a member, please contact Lisa Hatina directly by email at lhatina@cansia.ca.

Myth vs. Fact

Picture

Myth: High electricity prices are related to the influx of renewable energy technologies.

Fact: The high cost of electricity has little to do with energy costs themselves, and are largely embedded in the service charges billed to consumers. In fact, the introduction of renewable energy technologies will ensure that in the long term, energy costs will stabilize.
Picture

Myth: Ontarians are opposed to investment of renewable energy technologies.

Fact: Public opinion polls show that Ontarians support the provincial government’s renewable energy shift, and are in favour of increased investment in renewable energy technologies.
Picture

Myth: Renewable energy is an economic drag in Ontario.

Fact: Investment in renewable energy technology has resulted in the creation of jobs, and has a positive economic impact for the province and the municipalities that host renewable energy sites. Since 2008, renewable energy projects have invested over $14 billion in Ontario’s economy.
Picture

Myth: Ontario has so much electricity that it pays other jurisdictions to take the excess supply.

Fact: As we move toward the implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan, there is a projected increase in energy demand and Ontario will need to meet this increase in a cost effective and carbon neutral way.

Support Renewable Energy Today

Join REAO in telling the Ontario Government that it’s time to renew its plan for renewable energy.

Visit renewourfuture.ca and take action. Ask the provincial government to renew their commitment to renewable energy by submitting an email to the Minister of Energy, Glenn Thibeault and your local MPP.

Canadian Federal Budget 2017 Earmarks $3 billion for Decarbonized and Smarter Energy Systems

23/3/2017

21st Century Electricity System Driver for Climate Action and Clean Technology for Clean Growth

Ottawa, ON - (March 23, 2017) – The Canadian Federal Government released its first budget yesterday since ratifying the Paris Agreement.

Canadian Solar Industries Association’s President & CEO, John Gorman, released the following statements:

“Today’s budget is another early milestone in Canada’s transition to our cleaner energy future. It advances our progress on international obligations, helps Canada adapt to the impacts of climate change and allows our nation to remain competitive in the rapidly changing global economy.  Reducing subsidies to fossil fuels, putting a price on pollution and supporting major green infrastructure projects laid the groundwork.  Budget 2017’s strategic investments—ear-marked for the next generation of clean electricity, storage and smart grid projects—places individuals, households, communities and the buildings that they live and work in at the centre of the solution to our energy future”.

“The social, economic and environmental costs of relying on diesel in Canada’s northern and remote communities cannot be overstated. CanSIA applauds the continued leadership and investment demonstrated in today’s federal budget in the transition toward local renewable energy resources and away from imported diesel fuels is welcome.  Integrating solar, storage and micro-grids is an area where Canada can be the global leader”.

In addition to signalling that further details on the allocation of the $2 billion Low Carbon Economy Fund will be announced in the near future, the following is a list of specific allocations to programs that will support the transition to a cleaner, smarter and more distributed energy system:
  • $100 million to support smart grid, storage and clean electricity technology demonstration projects.
  • $220 million to reduce the reliance of remote communities on diesel fuel and support renewable power.
  • $182 million to retrofit existing buildings and build new net-zero energy consumption buildings across Canada.
  • $200 million to support the deployment of emerging renewable energy technologies nearing commercialization.

These investments demonstrate recognition that clean technologies such as solar energy are now commercially ready to play a mainstream role in the 21st Century.  The timing for such a transition has never been better given declining technology costs and the pressing opportunity for Canadian industry to improve its position and expertise in this booming global market niche.
